SKYMAGIC is an autonomously flown indoor and outdoor performance drone system. Creative and dynamic, our customised fleet of performance drones are each mounted with a super bright RGB pixel and operated via a single ground control station. Launched high into the night sky or within an enclosed venue, our swarm formation drone offering can execute stunning 3D displays and mesmerising choreographic sequences to dazzling effect.
THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE NORTH
This mesmerising show, which featured 100 SKYMAGIC performance drones – each equipped with colour-changing LEDs– was developed around a track written and produced by electronic duo Darkstar. It explored the notion of home and what we perceive as home. SKYMAGIC’s choreography was designed to spark a sense of pride by drawing on the region’s rich heritage and celebrating its exciting future.
The North Star– a beacon that guides us home but also leads people on their own journeys into the future – was a key motif within a series of large tableaux. Through this metaphor, the show honoured the past, celebrated the present and shined a light on the dawn of a new generation that is proud to call the North their home.
DUBAI PARKS AND RESORTS
More than 1,500 dignitaries & VIP’s attended the opening of this prestigious new theme park in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai. The opening ceremony was broadcast live on Dubai TV and shown across the wider region.
As one of only a handful of companies globally that have the capability, expertise and resource to deliver this very bespoke and complex activity, our autonomously flown, responsive swarm drone fleet was the perfect fit.
With a very tight timeline, our agile team worked tirelessly with Action Impact’s own executive creative director, producing a series of intricate trajectories in pre-visualisation, allowing them to be shared with the client for quick review. This extremely user-friendly interface allowed us to develop the creative collaboratively and expedite the process, creating a stunning 3-minute swarm formation drone show weaving the shows ‘Wonders of the Universe’ narrative into a series of 2D and 3D trajectories filling the performance envelope above the stage.
DUBAI WORLD CUP – CLOSING CEREMONY
SKYMAGIC was approached by the Chairman of Meydan – via the reputable live events agency HQWS – to design and deliver a bespoke, swarm formation drone show to provide a captivating aerial branding and light show finale to the DWC Closing Ceremony.
The Dubai World Cup is billed as the biggest sporting and social occasion on the Dubai calendar, with the $30m race day held at Meydan Stadium on the last Saturday in March. More than 60,000 race goers, breeders and trainers attended Meydan Stadium in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The Dubai World Cup was also shared with a global television audience of millions.
BMW 5 SERIES LAUNCH EVENT
Launching the newly released BMW 5 Series in China with our indoor system.
SKYMAGIC designed and executed the world’s first drone “runway” for the launch of the new BMW 5 Series in a bespoke sequence above the vehicles.
We created the longest drone runway comprising of 30 drones for the launch of BMW 5 Series in China. Deploying our indoor system, we used multiple motion capture cameras allowing the drone to execute a stable hover and flight path over a large, indoor areas to stunning effect.
A striking performance set against the stunning backdrop of the iconic Mt Fuji.
SKYMAGIC exploited the beautiful backdrop of the world heritage site Mt. Fuji to stage the first live performance using our MIDI controlled, LED caged flying platforms.
Deploying more than 20 of our specially customised, LED caged performance drones we executed a striking audio visual extravaganza. The stable, autonomously flown fleet dancing in perfect harmony to the driving musical score performed by orchestra of traditional Japanese samisen players heralded the beginning of our journey into swarm formation performance drones…
Sample Performance Space – (Stage size: L x W x H, 10m x15m x 7m for 20 drones)
The indoor drone system utilises ultra wide band tracking (UWB) to create an indoor three dimensional performance envelope. The install comprises 24 tracking nodes, known as anchors, placed around the performance envelope on static points either mounted to truss or fixed scenic elements of the set design and a single control system that can run up to 200 drones. The system requires the anchors to be outside of any planned flightpath for the drones as they will act as a virtual container for the drone choreography. The ground control station (GCS) is setup back stage running alongside a second fully redundant system to provide backup in case of system failure.
The system requires direct line of sight to the drones and on this basis we would recommend having no scenic elements or fixtures within 1m of each node. The anchors are 20cm x 20cm x 20cm and have a nominal power draw of around 10w each.
The drones can take off and land from any position within the performance envelope and fly for up to 5 minutes at a time between battery changes. The communication between the GCS and the drones themselves happens over 2.4Ghz wifi connection however this is only used to activate and send a total of 3 commands throughout the performance rather than constant communication.
