THE SILENCE OF LIGHT

THE SILENCE OF LIGHT

Client: Balich Wonder Studio
Location: Hegra, AlUla

brief

SKYMAGIC were approached by Balich Wonder Studio KSA to design a drone light artwork that responds to Hegra, the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site in AlUla, as part of AlUla Wellness Festival. The Silence of Light is an art installation that explores the origins, movement and beauty of light, and how this natural wonder is routed in Hegra.

Set above the monolithic Tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza – Hegra’s largest tomb which rises to 72 feet high – the performance was designed to interact with the majestic landscape and celebrate its iconic landmarks and deep meaning. Through studying inscriptions from the tombs of Hegra, an understanding of the site’s relationship to the light and sun directly informed the concept of the piece.

Beginning with the creation of light, the story guided a small audience on an intimate journey, exploring the many movements of photons and light waves with theatrical twists and turns of the drone fleet, appearing and disappearing within the landscape and rock formations.

In the final act of The Silence of Light, the iconic Sun Disc rose high into the night sky, speaking to the heritage of sun worship, before shattering to reveal the Eagle: a creature that, like light itself, is unbound to the earth.

The artwork took place over three nights as part of the AlUla Wellness Festival, accompanied by a live experience soundtrack designed by On the Sly Production.
